Planning a trip to Italy but unsure where to start? Look no further! This itinerary will guide you through some of my favorite destinations in Central and Northern Italy. Each stop offers unique experiences that showcase the rich Italian culture. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, this guide will help you make the most of your journey!
1. First Stop: Pisa (~1 day)

Kick off your trip by flying into Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa, conveniently located in central Italy's Tuscany region. It's just a 25-30 minute train ride to the city, where you can explore iconic attractions like the Leaning Tower, Piazza dei Miracoli, and the Cathedral.
Arrival Options:
Morning Arrival: If you’ve flown overnight, use the luggage storage service at the airport (10 euros for the day) and head into the city without your bags.
Afternoon/Evening Arrival: Consider booking a hotel for the night, either in the city or close to the airport.
Pisa is small enough to explore in a few hours, so I recommend dedicating just one day to your visit. You can choose your activities based on your interests; with all ticket options available online. A must-do is climbing the Leaning Tower—just remember to wear shoes with good grip, as the marble stairs can be slick and have no railings!
2. Next Stop: Florence (~2 days)

After your day in Pisa, take the one-hour train ride to Florence, the capital of Tuscany. Arriving in the afternoon or evening? Start your trip with a visit to Ponte Vecchio and get to know the city a little better.
Day 1: Spend your first full day wandering the city. I love exploring on foot before diving into museums. Be sure to take in the stunning view from Piazzale Michelangelo
Day 2: Visit the Galleria dell'Accademia to admire masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David. Afterward, enjoy a variety of food options and drinks at Mercato Centrale, just a short nine-minute walk away.
3. Next Stop(s): The Cinque Terre (~2 days)

From Florence, just a three-hour train ride away are the breathtaking Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Choose to stay in one of these towns or opt for quieter beach towns nearby for a more relaxed experience.
While there is the option to buy a train ticket that allows you to see each town, I personally don’t believe each town is worth visiting, as some are smaller with limited attractions. I recommend starting in Riomaggiore and exploring the town before hiking to Manarola via the scenic Via dell’Amore (Lover’s Lane).
For a bit of adventure, take the ferry from Manarola to Monterosso, the largest village, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and kayaks to enjoy a day at the beach.
4. Next Stop: Levanto/Bonassola (~1 day)

Whether you're based in Cinque Terre or nearby, consider a day trip to Levanto or Bonassola. These delightful beach towns are connected by a tunnel, making it easy to walk or take a train between them. They offer a peaceful escape and a chance to unwind while exploring somewhere new.
5. Finally: Genoa (~2 days)

Wrap up your adventure with a two-hour train ride to Genoa, located in the Liguria region and known for its Mediterranean seaport.
Day 1: Stroll along Via XX Settembre, the city’s main shopping street that leads to Piazza de Ferrari. Use this day to soak in the sights and atmosphere of the city.
Day 2: Spend your second day at the Aquarium of Genoa, one of the largest in Europe, then explore any other attractions that pique your interest.
One of the great advantages of Genoa is its proximity to the Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport, just a short train ride away, making your journey home seamless.
Safe Travels!
From the iconic sights of Pisa to the artistic treasures of Florence, the stunning coastlines of Cinque Terre, and the vibrant atmosphere of Genoa, each destination offers something special. Whether you sought adventure or simply a place to unwind, this itinerary provides a perfect blend of experiences to make the most of your trip.
